Shot in the Backup Drive

One question that might come to mind when looking at this site is Where’s all your work? At least, that’s a question worth asking. As an accomplished illustrator, designer, and creative, I should have an abundance of work to show here. The primary reason that I don’t is quite simple; my hard drive failed. But what about your backup drive? you might ask. Well, that also failed.

Shot in the Backup Drive

The first hard drive failure was bad enough that the data was mostly irretrievable without some serious effort. At the time, I couldn’t really afford it, and besides, I had my backup drive. The reason I couldn’t afford the data retrieval was because of my serious need to replace my G5. Not only did the hard drive fail, the logic board died.

After dumping a bunch of cash on a new Mac , I decided not to copy over all the data from my backup, and instead I started over from scratch. I was going to be running a new OS and would need all kinds of software upgrades anyway, and I could always go back for that data when I needed it. Because I have been so busy at my current job for so long, I wasn’t in any real hurry. But then came the day that I decided to start working in updating my portfolio, and that’s when I realized I had no data to work with.

I tried booting up the drive in every way I knew how, but every time, the drive came up empty. I took it in to the specialists, only to be embarrassingly told that the drive indeed had no data on it whatsoever. For the life of me, I still do not know what went wrong, and I’ve given up trying to figure it out.

So with that, I decided rather than re-create my portfolio from scratch, I would create an entirely different site altogether. Certainly, there are still examples of some of my past work peppered throughout the site. These are from the bits and pieces I’ve scraped together from the Interwebs, and the previous version of my site. There will be some old stuff showing up in new posts on occasion as I come across it, but I decided to focus on present work. What will likely come out of that are posts that are more commentary, focused on UX and design in general, things I find inspirational, plus even some tutorials, perhaps. The main purpose is to not so much show examples of my abilities, but to provide insight into who I am professionally, how I think, and how I solve problems.

Meanwhile, I’m going to work on backing up my backups.
